What It Means to Be a Certified Specialist
Most criminal lawyers are not certified specialists.
A Certified Criminal Law Specialist is a designation awarded by the Law Society of Ontario to lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional skill, experience, and commitment to criminal defence. The process is rigorous. The standards are high. Most lawyers who practise criminal law do not hold it.
Michael Venturi holds it.
That designation is not a marketing claim. It is a formal recognition by the governing body of Ontario lawyers that Michael has met an exceptional standard in criminal defence.
Sudbury. Northern Ontario. These Courts.
Michael was born in Coniston and grew up in Greater Sudbury. He began his legal career at Weaver Simmons LLP, the largest law firm in Northern Ontario, and has been a partner there ever since.
He knows these courts. He knows the judges and the prosecutors. He knows how cases move through the system in Northern Ontario, because he has been doing this work here his entire career.
That local knowledge is not a small thing. It shapes strategy, timing, and outcome.

Results That Matter
Absolute Discharge. No Criminal Record.
A 71-year-old woman in Greater Sudbury was charged with operating a common gaming house. The Crown sought a suspended sentence and a $1,000 fine.
Michael saw the case differently. He argued for an absolute discharge and proposed a $500 donation to a local food bank in place of the fine. The judge agreed, ruling that a fine was unjust given the circumstances.
His client left court with no criminal record.
Conditional Sentence. No Jail.
A client pleaded guilty to two counts of assault, charges that typically carry a jail sentence. Michael presented evidence of his client's schizophrenia diagnosis and demonstrated his commitment to ongoing treatment.
The result was a 90-day conditional sentence served in the community, 18 months of probation, and participation in the Partner Assault Response program. His client did not go to jail.
These cases do not resolve themselves. They are won through preparation, argument, and knowing where to push.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a Certified Criminal Law Specialist mean for my case? It means your lawyer has been formally recognized by the Law Society of Ontario for exceptional skill in criminal defence. It is not an honorary title. It reflects years of focused practice and a demonstrated standard of excellence that most criminal lawyers do not meet.
Do I need a lawyer even if I plan to plead guilty? Yes. Especially then. A lawyer can review the evidence before you enter any plea. Charges are sometimes reduced or withdrawn after that review. Pleading guilty without legal advice can mean accepting consequences you did not have to accept.
What if I have already spoken to police? Do not say anything more. Call a lawyer and let them assess where things stand before you take another step.
How quickly do I need to act? As soon as possible. Decisions made in the first days of a case, about bail conditions, statements, and court appearances, can affect your options for the entire case.
What does a consultation cost? Nothing. The consultation is free, confidential, and available any time.
The Right Lawyer Changes What Is Possible
A charge is not a conviction. The prosecution must prove its case. Evidence can be challenged. Charges can be reduced or withdrawn.
But none of that happens on its own.
Michael Venturi has spent 16 + years fighting for people in Sudbury courts. He is a Certified Criminal Law Specialist, a partner at the largest law firm in Northern Ontario, and a lawyer who has built his entire career on criminal defence.
